VJ Event - Saturday 15 August

Unable to hold a major event to commemorate VJ day, we have been planning how we can focus on the 75th anniversary safely on 15th August. Our external display, using photographs and archives from the collection supported by quotes from those that were there, is almost ready. Whilst we cannot hold any large-scale activity, we can pull something together to focus on the war in the Far East, and remind visitors about 'the Forgotten Army.'

We have been lucky. People have been so kind to offer their help to make this event possible, even with restrictions. The Military Vehicle Trust, under the guidance of Chris Hallam, have offered to bring WW2 vehicles. Parked on the parade square with social distancing, visitors will be able to walk round and chat to the vehicle owners. Complimenting the vehicles will be John Sadler, a supporter of the Museum who has worked with us before. He will be bringing Burma-related material to show people.

What we hope to do is to raise awareness of war in the Far East. With three Border Regiment Battalions involved in the Burma campaign, we are keen that we mark the 75th anniversary, but appreciate the restrictions. Watch this space to find out more as we put together the final details.
