The Coronation Mug

As it is the Queen's official birthday, I thought I would post a short related royal post this evening. The Queen, holds the title of the Duke of Lancaster, and as such is the Colonel-in-Chief of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, the County Infantry Regiment. Within the Museum we hold the Collections of the antecedent Regiments and in 2006 the King's Own Royal Border Regiment became part of the Duke of Lancaster's.

Of course in lockdown I don't have an abundance of royal related paraphernalia available within the confines of Wooding Towers. But in my dining room I have this wonderful souvenir of the Queen's coronation of 1953 so thought I would give it an airing and include it on this evening's blog post. It is part of three royal ceramic items that belonged to my Grandad. One ceramic beaker commemorates the coronation of George V in 1911 and the other is a silver jubilee mug for the celebrations of 1935. All  three of these had been preciously wrapped, and placed in a shoe box and as a lover of history, I inherited these a few years ago.

So it seemed appropriate that I gave this mug a little polish and dust today as a birthday treat.
