To All those Dads Out There

Today is father's day so I thought I would include a photo of my lovely dad as a young national serviceman in the back garden of his family home. Taken in the early 1950s, it shows a proud young man sporting the cap badge of the Royal Military Police, the Corps in which he would serve for over 20 years.
I am listening to the radio and it is full of dedications to the nations' fathers. N has written her card and has promised to spend the afternoon in the kitchen preparing tea for her dad (with a little help from her mum!). Everywhere people are thinking about their fathers. Sadly, my dad is no longer with us but I still fondly think of him on father's day.
Father's day is a tradition which we inherited from the USA. Started in 1910, the idea was slow to catch on here as, unlike mother's day, it didn't have the same impact. Certainly as a child I don't remember celebrating father's day in the same way that I carefully made cards and planted bulbs for mother's day. But that has changed and now father's day has become a firm part of the nation's calendar.
So as I head towards the kitchen to peel the spuds, let's wish all dads everywhere a very happy father's day.
