VJ 75 commemorations
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them."
Despite restrictions, the Museum managed to hold a VJ75 anniversary event at the Castle. Members of the Carlisle branch of the Regimental Association undertook to lead the two minutes silence at 11am. It was important for us to remember the Forgotten Army, so visitors, event volunteers and staff stopped to pay their respects and reflect. A bugle sounded the Last Post, standards were dipped and a respectful silence swept across the site. Three battalions of the Border Regiment and the Cumberland Gunners were in my mind as I stood with others. Putting together the exhibition and speaking to the press has brought this particular moment in history to the forefront for me. The Forgotten Army was being remembered.
'When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say,
For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.'
